Newsletter No. 13 5th November 2018
First of all, some news about our players’ successes at various competitions. Our inaugural Club Mêlée competition came to a close on 7th October with Brian Forbes winning the men’s event, with 16 wins out of 23 games played. Zena made it a family affair winning the ladies title with 12 wins out of 23 games played. An encouraging total of 33 players from the club took part in this event during the year and hopefully more will want to join in next year.
On the same day, Kevin Frost won the Big Mêlée event at Bourne Abbots, and was successful again one week later at a very wet Lincoln Branleys, winning the Autumn Doubles title with Mokhtar, with Bryan Hodges and Abdel finishing third.
On 18th October at Nutbrook, our Nottingham City Riders team collected trophies for winning the Thursday Pairs League and finishing runners-up in the Cup.
The final of Sherwood Shield Competition took place at Ravenshead on 21st October. Although our team won 6 out of the final 12 games of the season, it wasn’t enough to move us up the table and we finished in last spot.
More successful was our first match in defence of the Winter League trophy on 28th October at Mansfield, when our team won 8 out of 9 games to lead the table.
Finally, we hosted the first Firecracker Triples competition on 4th November. Sixteen teams took part from across the region, but it was very much a home grown success with first prize going to Kevin, Abdel and Bryan Hodges. Congratulations to them. Runners-up were Christine, Peter Newton and myself, with Mokhtar finishing third partnered by Pat and Colin from other clubs. Well done to all who took part, and a big thank you to Elaine, Carol and Peter Thorpe for their help with scoring, running the raffle and providing the refreshments.
Events coming up include the third round of the EuroCup on Saturday 10th November when we host Heckmondwike from Yorkshire. Next round of the Mercia Winter League is here at our club on 25th November.
In other matters, discussions are continuing with the organisers of the Thursday Pairs League to see if the league can continue in the form it has been run over the last few years. The League AGM at Nutbrook and a further meeting last week at Mansfield clearly demonstrated that the suggestion of a split into a northern and southern division is by no means cut and dried so watch this space for any further developments.
Thank you to all those who turned out on Saturday October 27th to help with weeding, cleaning and general tidying up at the club. Your help is very much appreciated.
And if you haven’t put your name down for our Christmas meal this year please do so promptly so that Vonnie, who is organising this for us, can confirm our booking. Details are available in the cabin.
The Mercia Winter League got under way today on a bright, but cool day at Titchfield Park, Mansfield. A record ten clubs are competing for the winter league title this year, with a good number of the clubs bringing a mix of both established players and newer members who were playing in the Mercia Winter League for the first time.
An interesting format with a mixed triple and two doubles teams playing each of the other clubs in a Round Robin over three dates.
A promising start for Nottingham City, who at the end of the first round are narrowly leading the results table. So well done, Elaine, Neil and Kevin; Mokhtar and Zena; Brian and Peter.
The first Annual Firecracker Triples on 4th November 2018 saw 16 teams take part. In 3rd Place were Liverpools,
2nd were The Sparklers
and FHF were the winners.
